Sharjah Arabic Poetry Festival – 17th Edition

Date: January 13 - January 18
Poetry - Main Event

The Sharjah Arabic Poetry Festival was launched in 2002, five years after House of Poetry was established, it has become a destination for poetry enthusiasts both locally and regionally, as it has hosted hundreds of Arab poets over the years. The festival has been met with a large success due to the directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, and Ruler of Sharjah. His Highness emphasises that Arabic poetry will forever persist, and underlines the role of poetry and poets in preserving the Arabic language, and in recording and documenting reality in Arab countries as well as its role in expressing great ideas and feelings and promoting the national and patriotic values of our Arab culture. The Department of Culture and Information has honoured young poets in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Mauritania, in some symposiums held in their home countries, and has also printed selections of their poetry. The Department also inaugurated poetry houses that were established in Mafraq (Jordan), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Luxor (Egypt) and Kairouan (Tunisia) in the first phase of the project, which is morally and materially supported by His Highness Ruler of Sharjah.
