Sharjah-

Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Sharjah Department of Culture and Director of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, announced details of the eleventh edition, which will start this Wednesday under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The events will run until November 30 in the Calligraphy Square in the heart of Sharjah, the Sharjah Art Museum, the House of Wisdom, and the University of Sharjah, among other locations.
Al Qaseer noted that this edition features over 600 artworks by 260 artists from various countries and includes 94 activities, including exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and seminars, organized by the Department of Culture in collaboration with more than 30 entities and institutions in Sharjah.
This was announced during a press conference held at the department, attended by His Excellency Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture, participating artists, and media representatives from around the world.

At the beginning, Al-Qaseer welcomed the attendees, saying: "We are pleased to meet here again at the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, which is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, may God protect him. For two decades, the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial has been a beacon, illuminating the art of Arabic calligraphy on the global stage. Since its inception in 2004, the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial has played a pivotal role in reviving the splendor of this ancient art form, in alignment with the vision of His Highness, and guided by His Highness's deep appreciation for calligraphy as a quintessential Islamic art, the Biennial has consistently delved into specialized themes that explore the rich history and profound significance of calligraphy."

Al-Qaseer added: "In this current edition, the eleventh, the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, organized by the Cultural Affairs Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture, is themed 'Inscriptions', opening the doors for more than 300 artists from various countries, including researchers, specialists, and international calligraphers, to present all that can relate to this broad and multi-faceted theme."

Regarding the theme of the current edition, the Director of Cultural Affairs stated: "The theme of each edition of the biennial provides a broad margin for creativity in achieving calligraphic works, allowing for multiple meanings that enhance the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy and reflect the energy of calligraphic works that reach a distinctive artistic status due to their unique creative character. Here we stand before a distinctive theme that offers the creator vast artistic horizons. Throughout previous editions, the biennial has enriched a visual culture that indicates creative genius in the calligraphic works of a group of calligraphers, each bringing their name and extensive practical experience to Sharjah."

He pointed out that "the Sharjah Biennial has sought to achieve the universality of calligraphy, and it has succeeded, resulting in the formation of a qualitative audience that reads the artwork reflectively, exploring what lies behind the words in their symbolic meaning and emotional indicators, interacting with the calligraphic work as a pure expression of what transpires within the depths of the human soul."

Concerning the details of the current edition and its numbers, the Director of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial stated: "In each new edition, the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial presents a series of diverse activities. In this current edition, just two days away from the launch, filled with many details and numbers, we will be hosting 94 activities, including exhibitions, artistic workshops, lectures, and seminars, organized by the Department of Culture in collaboration with over 30 entities and institutions in Sharjah, including: The House of Wisdom, the Calligraphy Square, Al Qasimia University, the College of Fine Arts at the University of Sharjah, the Emirates Photographic Society, the Union of Arab Photographers, the Sharjah Art Museum,  and others."

He added: "The activities include diverse artistic and calligraphic exhibitions, totaling 30 exhibitions featuring 261 artists representing many Arab countries, including the UAE, Oman, Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Sudan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and many non-Arab countries, including Italy, Colombia, Turkey, Argentina, Pakistan, Spain, and Iran. It is worth noting that Mexico, Indonesia, and Singapore are participating for the first time, which confirms the biennial's expansion towards new global countries."
