Marrakech - Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the Sixth Moroccan Poetry Festival starts on Friday evening in Marrakech. Organized by the House of Poetry in Marrakech in collaboration with the Department of Culture in Sharjah and the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the festival spans three days and features the participation of over 30 Moroccan poets, artists, and intellectuals.
The opening ceremony took place at "Moulay Abdel Salam Garden" in the heart of Marrakech, attended by Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture in Sharjah; Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Department of Culture; Hicham Abqari, Director of the Arts Sector Directorate, representing Dr. Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication; as well as a large number of writers, intellectuals, and poetry enthusiasts.
The festival aligns with Marrakech's selection as the 2024 Capital of Islamic Culture, highlighting the city’s cultural, heritage, and historical significance. The event further reinforces the presence of poetry and its creators amidst the celebratory atmosphere of the city.
The opening ceremony began with a documentary presentation showcasing highlights of the seventh season of the House of Poetry’s activities in Marrakech, capturing its cultural and artistic endeavors throughout the year.
Al-Owais: A Festival Celebrating Poetry’s Vitality
In his speech, Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Owais emphasized the importance of poetic gatherings in promoting creativity and beauty. He remarked, "We are delighted to see the renewal of cultural gatherings, proud of the cultural achievements of this noble land. Observers of Morocco’s cultural scene will notice its rich and diverse creativity."
Al Owais praised the efforts of the House of Poetry in Marrakech and the festival’s role in celebrating poetic achievements. He expressed his gratitude to the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication for their cooperation in ensuring the success of the House of Poetry in Marrakech, Tetouan, and other regions of Morocco, which are brimming with authenticity and cultural heritage.
He further highlighted the collaboration between the Department of Culture and the Moroccan Ministry, underscoring the strong fraternal ties between the UAE and Morocco under wise leadership that values Arab unity. Conveying the greetings of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Al Owais added, "It is my honor to convey the greetings of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and his best wishes for the festival's success."
