145 Works Celebrating Arabic Calligraphy in “Katateeb Creations”
Al Qaseer: The Ruler of Sharjah’s patronage of Arabic calligraphy represents significant support for this authentic art
The “Houses of Calligraphers” at the Calligraphy Square in the Heart of Sharjah hosted the opening of the 8th edition of the Katateeb Creations exhibition, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and organized by the Cultural Affairs Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture.
The opening ceremony was attended by H.E. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture; H.E. Jamal Salem Al Turaifi, President of Al Qasimia University; Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Department; Dr. Mohammed Salem Al Dhoubi, Director of Religious Guidance at the Department of Islamic Affairs; along with organizers, participants, and an audience of Arabic calligraphy enthusiasts.
This edition featured 145 calligraphic works by 96 participants from the Katateeb program in Sharjah mosques, the Eastern and Central regions, the Sharjah Women’s Union Association, and Al Qasimia University. The diversity of participation also reflected international representation, including countries such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Uzbekistan, among others. The showcased works formed an artistic harmony of letters adorning the walls, presenting a rich visual culture through various scripts such as Ruq’ah, Naskh, Diwani, decoration and gilding, as well as digital calligraphy, featuring Qur’anic verses, prayers, and guiding expressions.
The annual Katateeb Creations competition honored 29 winners distributed as follows: 12 men, 11 women, 6 youth participants, in addition to 5 students from Al Qasimia University—an occasion that highlighted the prestigious status of Arabic calligraphy.
