A distinguished art workshop at the Emirates Fine Arts Society
As part of the activities of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial in its 11th edition, titled "Inscriptions," organized by the Cultural Affairs Administration of the Department of Culture in Sharjah, an art workshop titled "Calligraphic inscriptions" was held yesterday, Wednesday, at the Emirates Fine Arts Society. The workshop was supervised by Mr. Hossam Abdel Wahab, with the attendance of several artists and enthusiasts of this ancient art, who learned how to use modern design applications to enhance the quality of artistic work without compromising the essence of the artwork and the artist's unique creative touch.
At the beginning of the workshop, Abdel Wahab introduced the attendees to the concept of lettering evaluation (dotting, symbols, and their use in texts). He highlighted the importance of lettering evaluation in improving the quality of written texts, as well as the modern tools and applications used to facilitate and regulate the lettering process.
Abdel Wahab worked on a direct practical model, which is the "inscriptions" of text written in clear Thuluth script, and he explained how to extract the geometric patterns used by professional designers. He reviewed the limitless shapes and possibilities offered by modern digital applications, whether for modifying or refining the work. He also highlighted the colors that can be added to decorative elements, which give the work a distinct aesthetic dimension.
At the end of the workshop, Abdel Wahab emphasized that while these digital techniques are of high quality, they can never compete with the unique touch of the calligrapher or artist and their spirit, as much as they serve as a tool to save time and effort. He stressed that their true artistic value is rooted in the calligrapher's talent and mastery of the six traditional pens. Therefore, technology can never replace the skilled hand and creative spirit.
