Art Workshop on "Writing Numbers" at the Al-Noor Mosque.

As part of the 11th Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, themed "Inscriptions," organized by the Cultural Affairs Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture, an art workshop titled "Writing Numbers" was held on Monday at the Al-Noor Mosque in Al-Buhaira. The workshop was supervised by calligrapher Ayman Chazal and attended by several students and enthusiasts of Arabic calligraphy, aiming to teach them innovative methods for artistically and aesthetically writing numbers.

Chazal showcased various techniques rich in traditional Arabic calligraphy and decoration to give an artistic touch to the numbers. The workshop included practical examples, allowing participants to apply what they learned themselves, providing them with an opportunity to explore their creative potentials.

Chazal explained, through practical examples, that writing in Arabic calligraphy, whether for numbers or letters, follows an artistic style based on balance and precision. It must adhere to the principle of harmony between points and angles. The methods of writing numbers vary according to the type of calligraphy used; some may be ornamental to become part of the artistic beauty of the text.

In the same context, Chazal noted that numbers are elegant and straight in "Naskh" script. In contrast, "Thuluth" script features numbers with beautiful curves and decorations. The numbers should harmonize with the adjacent letters in terms of size and shape. This creates a harmony between the text and the numbers, so that the numbers do not appear out of place within the textual context.

Chazal emphasized that writing numbers in Arabic calligraphy requires training and practice to become proficient and consistent with the letters, which gives the written text its artistic value. He dedicated a portion of the workshop to allow students to apply what they have learned themselves, giving them the opportunity to explore their ability to write numbers.
