In confirmation of the importance of theatrical writing and composition in fostering cultural and theatrical activity, the Department of Culture in Sharjah established the Sharjah Award for Theatrical Composition in 1996, specifically during the seventh edition of the Sharjah Theatre Days Festival, based on the recommendations approved by the committees arising from the events of the Sharjah Theatre Days Festival. Considering that theatre reflects society, it is crucial that the reality of society is reflected on the local theater stage. Therefore, these recommendations align with the noble visions and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the Union, Ruler of Sharjah, emphasizing the necessity of supporting and encouraging local talent and fostering communication to sustain their creativity and engagement with the cultural and theatrical community. The inaugural launch of the Theatrical Composition Award in 1996 was a tribute and appreciation to the playwrights and theatrical creators from the United Arab Emirates and citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
